Guest love wandering the grounds of our Bar Harbor gardens. The large expansive lawn with it’s surrounding plantings are pictured in a photograph from the 1890s, in the photo fashionably dressed ladies in their long skirts played golf at an afternoon society tea on the lawn.

We also have tables and lawn chairs for relaxing and enjoying the peace and quiet. You would never know that you are just 3 short blocks from the center of Bar Harbor village. The brick terrace overlooks the large lawn and is a favorite spot for enjoying your early morning coffee or breakfast. The whole expanse is deliberately landscaped in a variety of shades of green (leaves of various sizes and shapes, shrubs, trees and grass) to provide a peaceful, calming aura.

Our Bar Harbor Gardens in Spring

In the spring, we have focal points of color as the various plants bloom: first the beautiful elderberry, followed in succession by a hawthorn tree, lilacs, a fabulous golden chain tree, the enkianthus (with it’s miniature pink “bell” blooms), and the Rose Bay rhododendron. Then it is GREEN – with a single white birch accenting the far end of the grass. In fact, we call it our “green ocean” as the various hues change with the daylight and shade.

The formal gardens on the other side of the property provide masses of brilliant colors. The lower garden colors allow views from the Suites Building and from Ashe Cottage. Table, chairs and benches provide seating for morning coffee – in a beautiful outside setting.
